Class 14 covers precious metals and their alloys, such as gold, silver, platinum and palladium in unwrought form or as ingots; precious and semi-precious stones and pearls; all jewellery, including imitation and paste jewellery; and horological instruments such as watches, clocks, stopwatches and their movements, dials, cases and bands. The explanatory note also brings in cuff links, tie pins, key rings and key chains with their charms, jewellery charms, jewellery boxes, and component parts such as clasps and beads. The boundary principle is function. A gold or silver article stays in Class 14 only when no other class covers its purpose: statues and boxes of precious metal belong here, but silver cutlery is Class 8, silver teapots and tableware Class 21 and gold pen nibs Class 16. Smartwatches are Class 9. Indian filers include gold and diamond jewellers, bullion dealers, diamond traders in Surat, Rajkot's imitation-jewellery makers, watch brands and Morbi's wall-clock manufacturers.

Class 14. The explanatory note says jewellery includes imitation jewellery, such as paste jewellery, so artificial, oxidised and fashion jewellery is filed in the same class as gold jewellery. Class 26 takes hair decorations such as hair bands and barrettes, and decorative charms that are not for jewellery, key rings or key chains.
Class 9. The Class 14 explanatory note expressly excludes smartwatches. Conventional and electric wristwatches, chronographs and stopwatches stay in Class 14, and so do watch bands, watch cases and presentation boxes for watches. A watch brand that also sells smartwatches under the same name should cover both Class 9 and Class 14.
Mostly not. Goods of precious metal are classified by function: silver spoons and forks are Class 8, and silver plates, thalis, bowls, glasses and teapots are Class 21 as tableware. Items with no other functional class stay in Class 14, such as statues and figurines (including idols) of precious metal, boxes of precious metal and prize cups of precious metal. A silverware brand selling both may need Classes 8, 14 and 21.
Key rings and key chains with a trinket or decorative fob are Class 14 whatever they are made of; the explanatory note lists key rings, key chains and charms for them without limiting the material. Retractable key rings and lanyards for keys are also Class 14. Plain split rings of common metal for keys are Class 6, and key cases that hold keys are Class 18.
Class 14 protects the brand on the jewellery itself. Retail showroom and online store services for jewellery are Class 35, which matters if the name is used as a shop brand or the store sells other makers' pieces.
